VIAGGIO A PIEDI NELLA MAGICA TERRA DELLA VALLE D’ITRIA

Gabriele D'Annunzio, during his stay in Valle D'Itria, on September 27, 1917, in describing the landscapes and places he traveled on that trip , wrote: "Remote country as a dream, and as an ancient age. The white way between dry walls. The contorted olive trees, on the large stumps, similar to those of the Itea, Delfo, Egina coves: Hellenic olive trees. The arsiccia grass in the shade, fawn velvet color. The black sheep, the sheep of the sacrifices to the divinities of underground, who flee between shadow and shadow. A few black goats with a yellow eye. A few crowds of half-naked peasants, similar to certain groups of bejeweled earthenware, similar to certain figures of the Campania vessels. In exhaustion I fall asleep ... I wake up and see a dream country, as if I were still sleeping. The stone amendment in the undulating terrain. The countless brown cones marked by the Phoenician emblem. Long red clouds in a sky of aquamarine ... White cities that fall in the evening. The pale moon in the clear sky. " The Valle d'Itria is just that: a fairytale land, dreamy, subtracted from time, characterized by sinuous dry stone walls, olive trees, almond trees, vines, and enchanted ancient villages, which make it the perfect setting for a fairytale or legend. We will retrace the ancient history of the old peasant civilization, which left its greatest testimony in the famous trulli. This type of construction is unique and magical in its kind, called "Architecture without architects", because it is the result of a centuries-old work done by the common man on nature to transform it, but without violence and respect, into a balanced relationship between man and environment. In short, a scenario full of emotions for all those who love to know a territory by walking.

The same name “ Itria ” It will be a good omen for us wayfarers: the toponym Itria, in fact, comes from the ancient Orient, and precisely from the cult of the Madonna Odigitria, which means in Greek “ the one indicating the direction &rdquo ;. The cult of this particular oriental icon was introduced in the countryside of Martina Franca, and in all the surrounding territories, in 970 by the Basilian monks. They took refuge here, in the Valle d'Itria, to escape the persecutions desired by the heretical emperor Leo III Isaurico, who prohibited the worship of sacred images throughout the Byzantine Empire.
These magical visions will keep us company throughout our journey on foot.

Day 1 – Locorotondo / Masseria Ferri: trekking along the cycle path of the Acquedotto Pugliese, from Locorotondo to Masseria Ferri.
Description: we will meet again at 9:00 am at Piazza Mitrano in Locorotondo, considered a country among the most beautiful villages in Italy, and the white balcony on the Murgia dei Trulli. In fact, from its belvedere, we will admire a territory that is at times exciting. Moreover, the town is famous for its very particular historical center, a group of white houses arranged on concentric rings. After the walk in the historic center of Locorotondo, we will leave the town to walk in the countryside of the Valle d'Itria, following the main channel of the Acquedotto Pugliese, the largest aqueduct in Europe. It consists of 10 km of complete immersion in the most authentic landscape of the Valle d'Itria, along an equipped track completely dedicated to pedestrians and cyclists. Once in Contrada Figazzano, a quaint village of Trulli, we will rest for a while and we will take our lunch with our sack lunch. Afterwards we will continue the journey to the Masseria Ferri farm. The farm is located on the hills of Ostuni, surrounded by a thick forest, and consists of an ancient masseria of 1600 with trulli, swimming pool and consecrated church, where mass is still celebrated. The farm, which takes its name from the homonymous district, is dedicated to the breeding of polodic cows, pigs, murgese horses, donkeys of Martina Franca and farm animals. In addition, its genuine products, such as pork / beef, typical cheeses (caciocavallo, cacioricotta, ricotta forte etc.), Cabernet and white wines of Martina F., can be purchased in the company store (but we will taste them all during dinner expected in this really special place!). We are sure then that the surrounding silence and the unique landscape, which you can enjoy in the farm, will leave you; an indelible memory in memory!
The arrival at Masseria Ferri, and the end of the trek is scheduled around 5:30 pm
Dinner and overnight in Masseria Ferri.
Total route length: 14 kilometers.

Day   2   – Masseria Ferri / Martina Franca: trekking in the heart of the Valle d'Itria, in the countryside between Cisternino and Martina Franca.
Description: after an extraordinary breakfast with typical products of the Valle d'Itria, and once greeted by the kind owners, we leave and leave the Masseria at 9:00. From here we will walk in the countryside between Cisternino and Martina Franca, among a mosaic of small vineyards marked by dry stone walls, Mediterranean woodland spots and silvery olive groves surrounding ancient farms, and numerous trulli scattered in the districts. During the walk we will visit the church of Sant'Antonio ai Cappuccini, nestled in the heart of the Valle d'Itria, halfway between Martina and Locorotondo. The Church and the Convent of the Capuchins are great testimonies of the history of this territory, since they were built in the sixteenth century on a previous settlement of the Basilian monks who officiated according to the Byzantine rite and depended on the Monastery of San Nicola di Casole near Otranto, founded in 1099.
We will visit the inside of the church, which presents inlaid wooden altars of exquisite workmanship and where, in the past, the cult for the Madonna Odegitria was professed.
After a short break and the consumption of your lunch bag, start our walk that will lead us to the goal of today's trek: the beautiful Martina Franca. Once in the village we will enjoy a guided walk in the historic center, with the church of Madonna del Carmine, the church of San Domenico, the Basilica of San Martino and the Palazzo Ducale with the halls of Arcadia, the Myth and the Bible, completely painted in tempera in the second half of the eighteenth century. In the historical center you will follow typical whitewashed streets and with rococo style palaces.
The end of the trek is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
Overnight at the Villa Rosa Hotel in Martina Franca, free dinner.
Total route length: 15 kilometers.

Day   3   &ndp; Martina Franca / Bosco delle Pianelle: trekking along ancient transatlantic sheep tracks Franca to the Regional Reserve "Bosco delle Pianelle", among woods of fragno, historic farmhouses and arable land.
Description: departure from Hotel Villa Rosa at 9:00 am, from where we will set off to reach the Regional Reserve "Bosco delle Pianelle". The Bosco Pianelle district marks the border between the territories of the towns of Crispiano, Martina Franca and Massafra, and preserves the largest forest complex of the Murgia dei Trulli. Here our trek will be really special: along the paths of the fragrant and holm oak woods that characterize the Bosco delle Pianelle, we can, in fact, meet several monumental holm oaks and suggestive hornbeam galleries. Our journey will end right at the Bosco delle Pianelle Visitor Center, around 17:30. A minibus will pick us up and give us a lift to Martina Franca.
